This coffee comes to us from the Rwenzori Silverback farm in the Rwenzori region of Uganda. Rwenzori lies on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Traditionally, much of the coffee grown in Uganda is Robusta, a coffee species not typically used in specialty coffee. After being introduced in the early 1900s, Arabica farming has expanded and now makes up around 20% of all coffee production in the country. Rwenzori Silverback is governed by the Rwenzori Farmer’s Cooperative Union (RFCU), an umbrella co-op representing 13-14 smaller co-ops and over 25,000 individual farmers who also grow vanilla and cacao in addition to coffee. These farmers face a number of challenges to their endeavors in the form of sub-optimal road networks, limited access to electricity, socio-economic shortcomings, and limited availability of affordable fertilizers and disease-resistant varietals.

This coffee is a first for us, having never released a Ugandan coffee to date. This naturally processed lot is roasted quite light and leads with exceptional florality and pleasant overarching sweetness. We taste honeysuckle and lavender florality and melon-like sweetness making for a deeply pleasant and easily palatable drinking experience.
