**NEW** KENYA Kii Peaberry

This week’s coffee comes from the Rungeto Farmer’s Cooperative Society (FCS for short) in the Gichugu district of Kirinyaga. Rungeto operates three mills: Kii, Kiangoi, and Karimikui. Some of you may be familiar with Kiangoi, as we’ve featured a harvest of theirs in the recent past. This lot from Kii is somewhat unique being a peaberry microlot. Most countries do not separate peaberries from the rest of their harvest and thus the peaberries are not offered separately. While the verdict is not clear, many people claim to prefer the flavor of peaberry coffee due to its “deeper sweetness and brighter acidity”.

After weeks of testing and tasting, we find this lot presents much of what we love about high quality Kenyan coffee. Rich sweetness, mild acidity, tartness, and a hint of umami are all present in the cup. A bright, sweet note of plum-to-cherry tomato is present from the outset, backed by mellow acidity like grapefruit. The sip finishes with sweetness like caramel and just a hint of black tea on the aftertaste. We believe this is a coffee that will please those of you who love Kenyan coffee, as well as those of you who find themselves generally opposed to Kenyan coffee.
