This coffee is the second of two lots sourced from the Embu region of Kenya. It is also a Regional Select (much like our Excelso Colombia regional select coffees) that was developed to highlight how different local environments - like soil and elevation - shape a coffee's unique flavor profile. For regional select coffees, green lots were blended that score between 84 and 87; however, when these lots made it stateside they were cupping out much higher, around 90 points. The Uteuzi Jimbo line, which is Swahili for "county select", focuses specifically on Kenya's top coffee-growing regions like Nyeri and Embu. While you won't get a single-producer farm story, you get incredible, reliable traceability right down to the specific county.
This second Embu lot presents a fun contrast to its sister lot. This coffee, like the previous lot, is a combination of Batian, SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11 varieties, however, the flavor notes are much different. This lot is distinctly citrus-y with upfront notes of ruby grapefruit and blood orange. That acidity is balanced by caramel sweetness with a hint of cola. While this lot makes for a vastly different cup, we find it equally delicious and a bit more fun and complex.
