Mrs. Tigest Wako is a respected coffee producer from Idedo, Gedeo - one of two premier localities renowned for top-tier Yirgacheffe coffee. In a region where land inheritance traditionally goes to male children and the average plot is just one hectare, Mrs. Wako defies norms as a rare female landowner managing a substantial 7.6-hectare farm inherited from her parents. She has modernized the estate by replacing older varieties like Kurume and Dega with high-performing 74110 and 74112 cultivars. 74110 and 74112 are Ethiopian coffee varieties developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in the mid-1970s (the number 74 represents the year they were developed, 1974). They are among the most famous and widely planted "JARC selections" in Ethiopia's specialty coffee industry today. Despite navigating the operational and bureaucratic hurdles of running a farm, she thrives with the steadfast support of her family and her husband, Mr. Abraham, a pastor and coffee supplier. Together, they direct their farm's success toward a shared goal: empowering all their children to pursue their dreams through education.
This naturally processed lot from Mrs. Wako is clean and mellow. Grind finer for a sweeter well-rounded cup and expect notes of bergamot, raspberry, demerara sugar and white florals.
