Coffees from Ecuador tend to be on the very pricey side and as such we tend to book only very small, special green lots. The reasons for this, perhaps apocryphal, are many; but the one that sticks in my head is that years ago a combination of coffee plant disease and depressed market prices caused most coffee farmers to exit the crop, leaving only the affluent hobbyist farmers to take up the reins. It is sort of like a comfortable retiree in the states purchasing a vineyard and making wine. This means very special, intentional and loved crops; but also very low volumes and high prices. Anyway, true or not, two pallets of 5 different green lots (from two farms) of these special coffees from Ecuador arrived last week. Only one lot, the current lot, is large enough for us to feature in our Subscription Program. This week's subscription is a unique cultivar, specific to Ecuador, known as Sidra. The Sidra variety is believed to be a cross of Typica or Crillo with Red Bourbon. However, recent work on the varietal has shown it has a direct Ethiopian lineage. In the cup look for notes of molasses, apricot, red apple, spiced tones, and dark honey. Enjoy this unique, fresh arrival coffee. Thank you for letting us be part of your day.
