The current coffee comes to us from Juan Contreas and his Las Flores farm in Santa Barbara, Honduras. This is the companion lot to the Jesus Marin Argueta lot out of La Paz (south of Santa Barbara) we shared with you several weeks back. This coffee is a single cultivar lot, composed of the Pacas cultivar. Pacas is believed to be bourbon mutation or a cross between bourbon and caturra. It was discovered in El Salvador in the 1940’s and is named after Senor Pacas, the man who discovered the cultivar. I find that the coffees from Honduras that we have presented, suggest classic latin american cup profiles (clean earth notes, balanced acidity, medium body) with a twist. The twist being, something I find in Burundi coffees, an herbal impression of hemp or hops (without the prominent citrus acidity often seen in Burundi coffees). In this coffee look for impressions of cedar, hops, and cherry.
