This coffee originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire, and located in central sub-Saharan Africa. It is the second largest country within Africa and the eleventh largest country (by land area) in the world. The DRC is extremely rich in raw materials (over 50% of all such exports are sold to China), but is also plagued by political instability, corruption, poor infrastructure and large scale humanitarian crises. In particular, this coffee originates from the Birambo Village in the Kalehe Territory in the South Kivu Providence. It is a micro-lot made sourced from 90 small farmers, 21 of whom are women (many widows as a result of violence and wars from political instability). The varietals making up those submitted to the Birambo Cooperative include Blue Mountain, Bourbon, Kabare 2, Catuai, and Caturra. The average elevation for the farms is approximately 2000 masl. In the cup look for notes of sumac, reduced red fruit, sweet, and suggestions of earth tones, like chocolate. This is also yet another coffee we have sourced that has a Lake Kivu nexus.
